Last Call for Hoodies

Players and parents,

Thanks to those of you who were able to come out tonight to purchase and/or pick up your hoodies.  We do still have a fair number of small, medium, and large sized hoodies left.  Our plan is for the coaches to be at Cottonwood Park near the tennis courts on Tuesday, 5/19, from 4 - 5 pm to allow players one last chance to purchase or pick up their hoodies.  We have been told that we are only allowed to accept cash at this point, so if you want to purchase a hoodie, please bring $35 in cash.

Hope to see some more of you next week!

Cottonwood Park tonight

As a reminder, Coach Rogers and Coach Keller will be at the tennis courts at Cottonwood Park tonight from 4 pm - 5 pm with the hoodies.  According to our records, the following girls have earned a free hoodie based on SnapRaise donations received:

Lyndsey Capps

Linnea Wuorenmaa

Kaitlin Laurence

Erin Bettner

Piper Butts

Caniya Robinson

We know that there a few of you who have also purchased hoodies  and there may be some of you who would still like to purchase hoodies, which cost $35.00.   If you have earned the hoodie or purchased the hoodie, please stop by to pick it up.  If you would like to purchase a hoodie, please bring a check made out to Doherty High School in the amount of $35 OR you can bring us exact change.

We WILL maintain appropriate social distancing expectations on Tuesday.  Please stay six feet apart and wear a mask if you have one.  Coach Rogers and Coach Keller will be wearing masks and keeping our distance from each other.  Girls will not be able to congregate and talk. This is basically a "get in and get out" venture, much as we would like to spend time catching up with everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Coach Rogers (440-4812) or Coach Keller (291-0572)

First off all, thank you for your hard work in contacting friends and family to contribute to our fundraiser this year!  For the girls who will be returning to the program next year, we will count all of this year's contributions towards your personal goal for next year.  Seniors, we really appreciate your leadership and your hard work on our fundraiser campaign.

4/21 Update

Spartan Girls tennis team and parents,

After six weeks of wondering what would happen to our tennis season, we just received official news from CHSAA this morning that the Spring sport season has been canceled for 2020.

CHSAA took a lot of information into consideration -- the inability to ensure operations under the protective guidelines, statewide accountability and public safety through all high school events --  and with this information the Association has canceled all performances, festivals, competitions, regular season and culminating CHSAA-sanctioned spring activities and athletics for the remainder of the 2020 season, ending on June 1.

The coaching staff has thought that this would be the eventual decision for several weeks, but we were hoping to salvage at least part of the season.

We now how disappointing this season has been for all of you, especially our seniors.   As stated in the latest communication from CHSAA, "Our hats are off to the many seniors that have shown maturity and resolve as their culminating year of high school has been impacted beyond activities and athletics due to this worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The Class of 2020 will not be forgotten."

Seniors, regardless of the squad that you are on, you will be hearing from Coach Rogers regarding having some photos taken.

For those of you who will be returning next year - we look forward to seeing you back on the courts.  Keep healthy, stay active, and continue playing tennis.

As always, please feel free to reach out to one of the coaches if you have any questions or concerns.

Coach Rogers, Coach Keller, Coach Peterson, and Coach Palmer

Hello from Coach Keller

Good afternoon players and parents,

I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that I am thinking of you and that I hope you are doing well.  As a result of social distancing, I have been spending a lot of time focusing on bettering myself - daily walks with Luna and Chief, reading, working on a really difficult jigsaw puzzle, videoconferencing with family and friends around the world, yoga, meditating, and even brushing up on my German skills by participating in online German classes daily.

If you are not already doing so, I would encourage to try to stay physically fit during these trying times.  If possible, get out and go for a walk or run every day and soak up some Vitamin D and fresh air.  It can do wonders for you!  As far as tennis is concerned, Coach Rogers covered ways that you could work out individually or with a family member, so try to do as much of that as is reasonably possible.

If you need any support from me, don't hesitate to send me an email at mary.keller@d11.org.  From there, we can set up a WebEx meeting if need be or if you so desire.

Stay healthy and safe!

Coach Keller

Tennis news from CHSAA

Dear SPARTANS and Parents:

I hope this communication finds you well, and that you and your families are staying safe mentally, physically and emotionally in this strangest of times. I wanted to reach out, as there is so much uncertainty with everything going on, so this email comes from a combination of sources: me, CHSAA, and our D11 AD. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions, or if you are in need of assistance in any way.

As you perhaps saw yesterday, CHSAA has extended the moratorium period on athletics and activities until April 18th, which is in accordance with Governor Polis’s order to shut down public events/places for 30 days, so exactly one month from now. As you well know, everything at this point is up in the air—and is the central reason that CHSAA has not even begun the decision-making process as to what spring sports look like if we do, in fact, get to come back on April 18th. It makes sense, with an ever-changing situation such as this one—there isn’t a reason to suppose what seasons might look like when we aren’t even sure if those dates will hold fast, so please be patient with them as they are trying their best to support all of their constituents. I will continue to communicate any changes with you.

That being said, coaches are still going to post workouts and communicate with your kids remotely, but I and others have communicated with them extensively that they are not to gather kids in groups, or have captains/athletes gather kids in groups—this is absolutely against what has been asked of us to this point. But I would ask, for ALL of us, engage in some sort of physical activity—as parents of athletes, you know the positive effects of exercise on the psyche, and for kids who are used to engaging in sport to go without that endorphin boost for a month is just not good, so please, engage in something with them, and our coaches posting workouts is an excellent way to do that as long as you feel safe in engaging in those workouts!

Some of you have asked about spring sports refunds, so at this point, I am copying directly from an email sent to us by Chris Noll, D11 athletic director:

Participation Fees:

With us not knowing what the seasons will look like, we are going to pause on an answer with this.  There are so many different things that could happen with all of this, we are going to pause, and make a decision at a later time!

There are SO MANY questions floating right now and please know that I, along with your building level athletic director will work on those questions.  What does this do to RPI?  When we come back on April 18, are we going to jump straight back into games?  Will the season be extended?  What happens if one team plays 10 games and one plays 15 games?  Is there a chance the entire season will be cancelled?  In times like this, kids and parents look to coaches and our approach needs to be simple.  Everyone needs to take a deep breath and relax.  Questions will be answered in due time.  We need to encourage our families to be safe!  Relax…

For my senior athletes and parents:  I am so disappointed for you—I can’t empathize…I’ve never been in a situation when I was healthy enough and ready to compete when I haven’t been able to, and this is so unfortunate.  I guess we can rest in the thought that what is supposed to happen will happen, but that doesn’t make it any easier for those of you who were anxiously waiting to participate in your final senior season.  For that, I am so sorry. And even as I say that, encourage yourself and your kids to be leaders—the younger athletes on your teams will respond how you respond, and you consistently have shown yourselves to be capable of handling far more than others give you credit for.  Hold your heads high, stay positive, and understand that we see you and know what you are dealing with, and we appreciate you entirely.

Thanks all; I appreciate all of you.  Stay safe, exercise, enjoy time with your kiddos, patronize small business if you can, and please let us know if you need anything!

Respecfully,

3/12/20 Team Meeting Today

Players and parents,

We will be meeting in the Spartan Center as planned to discuss the recent CHSAA decision and other important team items.  We will meet immediately after school and should finish by no later than 4 PM.  ALL levels are required to be at this meeting.

We will discuss plans for moving forward with the season, the fundraiser, and how athletes can work out invidually during CHSAA's temporary suspension of Spring sports practices and competitions.  We want to stress that during this time, team leaders and team captains may not organize team practices.  The whole point of the CHSAA decision was to limit student contact with one another, and (to be honest), the coaching staff.

JV and C Team Voss

Players and parents,

We have enough of the Voss completed so that we can make the decision as to who will be on JV and who will be on the C squad.  All of this is based on winning percentage points, i.e. #total points won divided by the total number of points played. I even looked at hypothetical situations for teams with remaining matches, and if those teams happened to "win out" and defeat their opponents by scores of 31-0, it would not make a difference in the determination of who is JV and who is C squad.

For the remainder of the week, both JV and C squad will practice after school from 320 PM until 5 PM.  Starting next Monday, the JV team will practice right after school from 320 PM - 5 PM and C squad will practice from 430 PM - 6 PM.

The JV Roster is as follows (in rank order according to the Voss):

#1 doubles: Chaeli W  & Erin B

#2 doubles: Sana H & Sierra T

#3 doubles: Ashley H & Emily Tetrault

#4 doubles: Tayva P & Kamee H

#5 doubles: Dori S & Sarah F

# 6 doubles: Leeya Q & Emily Taylor

# 7 doubles: Jillian S & Stephanie W

***JV will represent Doherty in a match against Canon City on Saturday.  Girls are expected to report to Doherty by NLT 845 AM to help warm up and set up for the match.

The C-squad roster is as follows (in rank order according to the Voss):

#1 doubles: Sydney P & Piper B

#2 doubles: Melanie L & Riley S

#3 doubles: Amber R & Kate B

#4 doubles: Annika B & Sami K

#5 doubles: Rachel K & Jillian B

#6 doubles: Lyndsey C & Lilly J

# 7 doubles: Caniya R & Kailyn T

***We have just heard that Canon City will be bringing their C squad girls up for a scrimmage on Saturday as well.  C squad will now be representing Doherty in that match on Saturday.  All C squad girls are expected to report to the Doherty courts on Saturday by NLT 10 AM.

Thanks for all of the hard work!

First Eligibility Check and ASTs

Players and parents,

The first grade check just took place.  As we explained to the girls and also to parents who attended the parent meeting last week, any girl who has two or more Fs at this point in time is unable to represent Doherty on the tennis courts until April 16th (when another grade check will be done).  Those players are welcome to attend practice each day after meeting with their teachers to, hopefully, bring up their grades, but they are unable to put on a Doherty uniform and represent our tennis program.  The other option would be for those girls to no longer be part of the tennis program.  They will need to speak to their coach about receiving a refund for the fees that have been paid to the Business Office.

Players with any combination of Ds and Fs must attend Athletic Study tables on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week during lunch.  Players must continue to attend ASTs until their grades are brought up to Cs or higher.  Mrs. Leasure will post a list on dohertyathletics.org, by student ID number, of those athletes who are required to attend ASTs.  The list is typically posted on Sunday.  Coaches will also attempt to contact those players indvidually, but ultimately it is the player's responsibility to check the dohertyathletics.org website each weekend.

If you have any questions, talk to a coach.

Potential JV/C teams

Players and parents,

The girls have been doing a great job of working through the Voss and we have accomplished so much these past few days.  We appreciate all of the hard work.

We only have 12 matches left to play to complete our 14 team Voss.  Barring illness, it is important for all teams to be at practice tomorrow from 320 - 5 PM.  The following teams have matches still to play in the Voss:
Team 1 (Amber & Kate) - 4 matches

Team 3 (Leeya & Emily Taylor) - 1 match

Team 5 (Rachel & Jillian) - 2 matches

Team 7 (Cniya & Kailyn) - 3 matches

Team 8 (Dora & Sarah) - 4 matches

Team 11 (Sydney & Piper) - 1 match

Team 12 (Ashley & Emily ) - 1 match

Team 13 (Sana & Sierra) - 2 matches

Team 14 (Lyndsey & Lilly) - 6 matches

Realistically, no matter how many of these matches are played tomorrow, we will have to form an initial JV team and an initial C squad team based on winning percentages at the end of practice tomorrow.  Coach Keller will input final scores and then post that information online tomorrow night.  Coach Keller will also look at remaining matches to determine if it will even be possible for a team to move from one group to the next (i.e. initial C squad up to JV) and if that is not mathematically possible, we will most likely not play those Voss matches so that we can actually start working on the REAL game of tennis and teaching the girls those skills necessary to participate in matches as doubles teams.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Coach Keller or Coach Palmer.

Team News 2020 Girl's Tennis

Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Doherty High School Girl’s Tennis Team!!  I am delighted to announce that after graduating 15 seniors last season, we currently have 38 wonderful young ladies registered and practicing.  We would love to see at least 6-8 more eager young ladies join us.

In the past years we have had the opportunity to take the 11-12 potential Varsity Members to Wasson.  This enabled the 32 JV and C squad members to work through their challenge ladder using the eight Doherty Courts.  At Wasson two out of the 4 courts had snow and ice in the shadows and were not safe. Having 40 plus girls at one facility extended the length of time to eventually complete the tryout procedure. A huge thank you to Mrs. Keller and Mrs. Palmer, my wonderful assistants, for allowing the Varsity to join the JV and C Squad at Doherty.  Welcome to our newest Coach Mark Peterson. Mark is a very highly skilled player and has many years of playing and coaching experience. We are very fortunate to have these three experienced coaches!!!

Normally, I will send my information about the previous week’s results and the schedule for the Varsity on either Saturday evening or Sunday.  Sue Keller will share results of the previous week and the future schedule for the Junior Varsity.  Diane Palmer will report the C squad results of the previous week and the schedule for the future week.  Sue, Diane, and Mark will also communicate with when necessary.   They all will speak with you when need arises.  You may call me any time with any questions or concerns.   Cheri Rogers  440-4812.

Just a few reminders:

1.We will try to finish practice for the C-squad by 6:15 PM, JV by 5:00 PM, and Varsity 5:30 PM.  If you have plans or needs for any earlier release time please call the coach or have your player let us know so that we can accommodate your needs.

2.  Please do enter your 20 e-mails as soon as possible prior to next Thursday for the Snap Raise Fundraiser.  If you did not get the form that explains everything, please ask your coaches for one immediately.  Thank you so much for your support.

3. The girls will be bringing their schedules home early this week (as quickly as our schedules are finalized).

4. Any questions please contact your coaches.

Schedule for Monday through Saturday tryouts and first meet on Saturday.  These tryouts will proceed through the week with a match Saturday against Canon City on 03-14, 2020.  The Varsity and Junior Varsity will be at Doherty at 8:45 to set up and warm up with the meet beginning at 10:00 AM.  Please bring snacks to share!!!!!

Anna Shewey       vs    Devon Gonzales

Linnea Wuoranmaa      vs    Katie Peterson

 Katelyn Laurence      vs        Aliyanna Ramirez

The 6 girls will play round robins against everyone else.    All singles play 2 out of  3 – 6 game sets (no add)  with a tie breaker at 5 – 5 games,  10 point tie breaker.  Everyone plays everyone in singles!!!!

The following girls are in the doubles order of the results of all mixed teams.  Because we do not know the order for our singles players yet, we will be mixing partners to find out the order that is a good starting point.

                                                                                    Doubles:

Sophe Ruesch and Kaylene Quist Phodes

                               Vs

Team Announcements

Players and parents,

As we get ready to kick off the season, we wanted to share some important information with you.

1) Players and parents will be responsible for all (with a few exceptions) rides to and from tennis matches.  The coaches cannot transport players nor will we arrange rides among students.  When we have large groups,i.e. two or more teams, traveling large distances, we will try to secure a bus for transportation.

2) We need every player to copy and paste the following link into a browser and to complete the from by the end of the day on Wednesday.

https://www.formlets.com/forms/7ndohnoLPb6xIh15/

3) There will be a mandatory parent meeting this Wednesday, 3/4, from 6 - 7 PM.  Parents will meet with the athletic director from 6 - 630 and then with team coaches from 630 - 7 PM.  We will let the girls know the location of the tennis meeting ASAP.

4) Information about our fundraiser with SnapRaise will be out soon.  We expect EVERY tennis team member to participate.  Parents are free to call Coach Rogers  at 719-440-4812 if they have questions about the fundraiser or other ways to support the team.

5) We have chosen team hoodies for this year.  If a player is able to raise $250 in donations through our fundraiser, then she is able to get her hoody free of charge, otherwise the hoody will be $35.  Players can pay for hoodies in the Business Office and then bring their coach a receipt.

6) The team will be providing team t-shirts for all players this year.  Please make sure that you fill in your unisex size t-shirt on the tennis form that is provided in item #2.

7) Looking ahead to Monday and Tuesday of next week (when students are not in school), we will still have tryouts taking place.  There will be a upper level group of players who will be conducting their tryouts at Wasson, and the bulk of the girls will be trying out at Doherty.  On Monday and Tuesday, the upper level group should plan to meet at Wasson at 330 pm and be prepared to tryout until 530 pm or so.  The potential JV/C squad girls should plan to meet at Doherty and tryout from 2 pm - 5 pm.

On Tuesday, the upper level group should plan to meet at Wasson at 2 pm and be prepared to tryout until 530 pm.  The potential JV/C squad group should plan to meet at Doherty and tryout from 2 pm - 5 pm.

8) Finally, the Spring sports season in the Rockies can have every single type of weather that you can imagine.  Girls need to be prepared for all weather conditions at every practice.  We often practice outside when the temperatures are in the uppper 30s and low 40s.  Girls should have layers of clothing with them every day for practice, including hats, sweatpants, sweatshirt, gloves, and a hat.  And - don't forget to throw in the sunscreen and a water bottle!

Tryouts tonight!

Players and parents,

All players need to meet in the wrestling room (right across from the pool) tonight after school for the first day of tennis tryouts.  Obviously, we will not head out to the courts because they are currently covered in snow and, at best, will still be very wet this afternoon.  With that being said, we still need EVERYONE to come to meeting the wrestling room tonight so that we can collect additional paperwork, talk about the tryout process, assess who needs additional equipment, etc.  We will also most likely do some conditioning, so the girls need to come prepared to work out.  PLEASE take off your shoes before you step onto the wrestling mats.

See you tonight!

Open Courts and Paperwork Reminder (Including Physical)

Tryouts for the 2020 women's tennis season will begin on Monday, March 2nd.  In order to tryout, girls must have all of their paperwork and fees turned into the DHS business office by the end of school on Wednesday, the 26th of February.  Springs sports registration will begin the second week of February.  Remember that a current physical is part of the registration paperwork.  Go to dohertyathletics.org, choose “Files and Links" and access the appropriate forms.

Weather permitting, we will have open courts on Monday, February 24th, immediately after school.  Report to the tennis courts with appropriate outdoor attire, tennis shoes, and a racquet.  If you are in need of a racquet, please speak to one of the coaches at open courts.  Open courts will finish up at 5 PM at the latest.  Assuming that the weather is nice, we will have open courts Monday through Thursday of that week (2/24, 2/25, 2/26, and 2/27).

Actual tryouts for all girls will begin on Monday, March 2nd.  It is really important for all girls to have their paperwork turned by March 2nd and also for them to be present at every day of tryouts, barring an unusual situation or illness.  Our first competitive match is on March 14th.    We typically have 50-60 girls who are trying out for the three levels of tennis, and we will need approximately two weeks to complete our Voss tryouts and have the girls placed at the appropriate level.

On Monday, March 2nd, please report to the tennis courts, with appropriate outdoor attire and paperwork, right after school.  On Monday, 3/9 and Tuesday, 3/10 , all girls should plan on participating in tryouts from 12 PM until 5 PM at a minimum.  These two days are non-attendance days for the students, but due to the fact that the Varsity and JV teams have a match on Saturday, 3/14, we will need to complete large portions of the Voss on those two days.

If you have any questions, please contact Coach Rogers or Coach Keller
