Starting Season B

Good morning Spartans and Parents:

I do always spend a bit of time reflecting on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day--I don't know everything about his life, but his writing inspires me, so I have read a good deal of his literature, and I spent a good amount of time teaching it when I was an English teacher as well.  I admire his humility, and his strength in humility.

It's what we will need to begin this Season B--humility, and grace...in bunches. As it was during Season A, there will be rules and limitations we don't like, but we will have to meet them in order to play, and I am thankful we get to play. This week, I am recording a video that your coaches will share with you once any tryouts are over, but I wanted to give you a quick update to ease your minds.

At home, we will have spectators.  El Paso County has given us 50 spectators at a home site, and in our league, the PPAC, we have committed to the following:

*2 spectators for each player home and away player in basketball and wrestling

*Swim is up to the facility because there are complicating factors--I don't think we will get spectators in when we are away, but Coach Barry and I are working to be creative to extend opportunity to parents in our limited seating venue.

*Hockey is up to the rink--at the World Arena, there will be no spectators, but at Sertich, it will be the same as basketball and wrestling.

We are also working on live stream options within individual programs, so your coaches will update you on that.

I have no clue what will happen with away venues besides the PPAC in town.  My goal as an AD is to communicate with away schools one week in advance so they know what to expect.  So, for example, our first home event for this season is Wednesday, 1/27, girls basketball vs. Regis.  I will communicate with Regis this Wednesday--that's my commitment...I don't know if everyone else will be the same, so we will ask for information from schools also one week in advance so that we know what to expect.  Our first event overall is boys and girls basketball away at Bear Creek next Monday, 1/25, so we will ask Bear Creek tomorrow about whether or not we get to have spectators, what time we can arrive, etc.  I have heard that there are many counties across the state that are not allowing spectators, so we can be thankful that El Paso County is allowing it.  If we compete somewhere with no spectators, we will seek live stream possibilities.

Please know that this season is unprecedented--your coaches, administrators, district officials, and CHSAA have put in more hours than ever before to figure out how we can play, so please extend grace. We are all working together for the good of kids, so please keep that in mind as we enter Season B.  I look forward to seeing you all soon.
